Holiday Pounds
Let’s face it – although we’re celebrating the most wonderful time of the year, it’s a season filled with calories. A huge Thanksgiving meal, a plethora of holiday parties and social gatherings, family get-togethers for Hanukkah, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve. It is, quite literally, more than a body can handle, especially if you focused on losing or maintaining your weight this year. Who wants to blow all that hard work now?
Ways to Manage
There are a myriad of ways to manage temptation even when there are latkes and applesauce or fudge from the secret family recipe available. The most important thing you can do is to have strategies in place that will help you manage your calorie intake. These strategies can include:
- Have your groceries delivered to avoid buying extra goodies
- Pack healthy snacks if you’re traveling
- Eat five vegetables or fruits every day
- Minimize your stress – do your holiday shopping online, for example
- Exercise – even ten minutes of movement will help
- Maintain your sleep routine
- Choose a small plate instead of a larger one at parties
- Weigh yourself regularly
- Have an accountability buddy who will remind you to stay focused on your goals
- Don’t go to a party or social event hungry – eat a small snack of veggies, nuts, or string cheese before you go
- Stay hydrated (with water)
- Be mindful of the liquid calories you’re consuming
If You Blow Your Plan
Everyone has a day in which they eat way more than they intended to. It’s ok. Get back on that horse and eat better the next day. If you’re having a lot of difficulty moving past your indulgence:
- Journal your thoughts about it
- Do something creative to distract you
- Don’t beat yourself up
- Find another form of self-care to replace what food does for you
- Talk it out with someone you trust
- Breathe deeply
- List all of the ways you have been successful in managing your weight this year
